In most American living rooms, the central piece of furniture is a coffee table. While typically serving as a highly functional table—holding drinks, remotes, books, and other regularly used items—it is also a decorative piece of furniture that adds to the overall décor of the room.
Finding the right coffee table for your space can be a challenge. You might find one that is the right shape and size, but the style is all wrong for your room. Conversely, you might find one that perfectly matches your room’s aesthetic, but it doesn’t come in the size you need. In addition, so many of the coffee tables on the market are poorly made and not able to withstand the rigors of daily use.
A custom coffee table made by Smith Farms can be the perfect solution to all of these challenges.
Coffee Tables That Are Made to Order and Completely Custom
There are some furniture companies that advertise that they sell custom coffee tables, when what they really mean is that they have coffee table styles that are customizable. There’s a big difference.
With a custom coffee table, every detail is chosen by you—from the size and shape of the table to the species of wood it is made from and the finish we put on it. You can add any sort of decorative details you desire so it perfectly matches your style. With a customizable coffee table, on the other hand, you typically only get to customize a detail or two. Maybe the furniture company allows you to select from a few different sizes or choose from a short list of stain colors, but you don’t get many options beyond that. For some people, that might be fine, but if you have a very specific idea in your head of what you want, working with a custom furniture company is likely the only way to achieve it.
Benefits of a Custom Coffee Table
The main benefit of working with a custom furniture company like Smith Farms for your coffee table is that the end result is exactly what you want and need for your space. If you’ve been shopping for coffee tables for a while, you likely already know how difficult it can be to find a coffee table with all the elements you are looking for—one that is the right size, shape, color, etc. If you want an oversized coffee table, this can be virtually impossible to find, even if you scour the internet. You don’t have to make any compromises on the design of your coffee table when you work with a custom furniture company.
In addition, a custom coffee table is almost certain to be higher quality than a piece that has been mass produced. At Smith Farms, we use only high-quality materials, as well as tried and true construction methods.

Top Styles and Shapes for Custom Coffee Tables
While most coffee tables are rectangular in shape, this certainly isn’t the only option. Your custom coffee table can be a square, a circle, an oval, or even an irregular “organic” shape. It can be crafted from a single slab of wood or from multiple boards that are carefully joined together in a way that looks seamless.
Base Styles and Materials for Custom Coffee Tables
In addition to a custom top, we can also design a completely custom base for your coffee table. Your coffee table’s base doesn’t have to be made from the same wood as the top of your table, and it doesn’t even have to be made from wood at all! We can have a metal base crafted just for your table if that’s something you want included in your design.
Another great option is to incorporate storage into your coffee table base. This can mean adding drawers or bypass doors to the base, or it could mean that the top of your table lifts up to expose storage underneath. Or it could be as simple as having a shelf installed below the tabletop.
Wood Selection for Custom Coffee Tables
Wood selection is very important when it comes to coffee tables. This is because coffee tables tend to get a lot of use. You want to select hardwood that will hold up under regular use, and maybe even a little abuse!
Based on the look and color you want to achieve, we can help you select the perfect hardwood for your custom coffee table. You can select from the slabs we have at our shop, or we can source a slab from one of our suppliers. Some of our favorite species of wood are Black Walnut, White Oak, Cherry, and Alder. These are all domestic hardwoods that are readily available, as well as more affordable than most exotic hardwoods.
If your table will be made from milled lumber, we will look for boards with a similar grain pattern to create a uniform look for your coffee table’s top.
