Are you ready to upgrade your home with custom furniture pieces? A solid wood dining table designed and crafted by Smith Farms would be a great place to start! Our dining tables are made from a variety of hardwoods, including domestic to exotic species, and using tried and true construction methods that contribute to the strength and durability of each piece.
If you’re tired of purchasing dining tables made from manufactured wood alternatives that look good at first, but then quickly start to show wear and tear, consider having a solid wood dining table built by Smith Farms.
Solid Wood Dining Tables That Are Made to Order and Completely Custom
Every dining table we make at Smith farms is completely custom! You don’t have to comprise on details like size, style, type of wood, stain color, or finish. Contrast this with furniture stores, which may offer some “customization” options, such as a few different size options or stain choices, but that don’t allow you to make many meaningful changes to their tables.
When you work with Smith Farms, you work closely with a custom furniture designer until we arrive at a design that is exactly what you are envisioning. After our initial discussion, we will provide you with a design, and from there, you can make any changes to how you want your dining table to look. We can also provide you with samples of different types of hardwoods to consider, as well as various stain options.
Once you have approved a design, we’ll get right to work. And because the person who designs your dining table will also be involved in building it, your table will turn out exactly as expected!

Benefits of Solid Wood Dining Tables
The main benefits associated with solid wood dining tables crafted by Smith Farms are their beauty, durability, and stability.
Much of the beauty of a solid wood dining table comes from the wood itself. There’s just something about real hardwood that can’t be replicated in manufactured wood-like products. With solid wood, you get natural grain patterns, color variations, and knots that contribute to the uniqueness and beauty of a piece.
The type of wood that is chosen for your piece can also contribute its stability and durability. In general, hardwoods are much more durable than the particle board or fiber board that is used in cheaper tables. The wood-look veneers that cover those wood composite materials are also prone to peeling or chipping, and once that happens, there’s not much you can do to make the table look good again. On the other hand, if you have a solid wood dining table, and it gets scratched, it can be sanded down and refinished to restore it back to its original beauty.

Base Styles for Solid Wood Dining Tables
Because everything we make at Smith Farms is completely custom, you have the option to select any base style you prefer for your dining table.
The most common option for the base of a dining table is to position four legs at the corners. Those legs can be straight or tapered, or they can even have some design to them. Another option is a pedestal or double pedestal base. A single pedestal is typically found in round dining tables and features a central support column, while a double pedestal is used in rectangular or oval tables. Then we have trestle bases which have two sets of legs that are connected by a horizontal beam.
All of these are great options! Your personal preference should dictate which one you select, because any of them will result in a sturdy dining table when built by a talented craftsman at Smith Farms.

Wood Selection for Solid Wood Dining Tables
There are so many great options when it comes to hardwoods that can be used in dining tables. We have our favorites, which we talked about in this blog post, but we can also help you select something else that will contribute to the overall look you are going for. Not sure what type of wood will be best for your table? We are happy to make suggestions and even show you samples.
Each type of hardwood has its own unique characteristics to consider. There are variations in color, grain pattern, and hardness, just to name a few. If price is a concern, there is also a wide range there. Some species of wood can get expensive—especially if they are imported or if they are currently in high demand. If one species of wood that you like is outside of your budget, we may be able to offer some alternatives that have similar characteristics but that come at a more affordable price point.

Tabletop Styles for Our Custom Dining Tables
When it comes to the type of top you choose for your custom dining table, there might be more options than you originally thought.
The first option is a slab tabletop. A slab top is crafted from a single piece of wood, cut lengthwise from a tree. People love slab tops because they put on full display the natural characteristics of the wood—the knots, the cracks, the entire grain pattern, and even the shape of the tree from which it was cut. We love dining tables with slab tops, as do many of our customers, but be advised they can be pricey. The slabs themselves can be expensive to acquire because they require a longer time to dry out prior to use (or need to be kiln dried), and they are expensive to ship due to their size and weight. Cutting slabs (as opposed to lumber) is also a less efficient use of the tree, which also contributes to their price.
There is also the option to join two slabs together to form a tabletop. When we do this, we try to use two slabs from the same tree, whenever possible, for a more uniform look. There are various methods for joining slabs, which we can discuss in the design phase of the project.
Another great option is a tabletop built from lumber. When we build a tabletop from multiple pieces of lumber, it can either have visible seams or it can be seamless. Many people prefer a seamless top on their dining table because it eliminates any areas that can collect dust and crumbs. In our seamless tabletops, we select boards with similar grain patterns for a more uniform look. If you like the more rustic look of a table that is obviously made from individual boards, then a tabletop with seams would be great for your home. It’s all about your preference!
Finally, we offer live-edge dining tabletops, which we will discuss in more detail below.
Custom Live-Edge Dining Tables
Live-edge dining tables have always been in demand, but they seem to be especially popular as of late. Live-edge dining tables are built from slabs of wood that maintain the shape of the tree, and sometimes even the bark. Depending on the size of your dining table, we can use a single slab, or we can join together two live-edge slabs.
These types of tables can be great in rustic homes, extremely modern homes, and everything in between. It all depends on the details that are included in the table (wood selection, leg style, finishes, etc.). When you work with Smith Farms, you can be sure that your live-edge slab will be finished to perfection—exactly how you want it.
Slab selection is probably the most important part of the process when it comes to having a live-edge dining table built. Even slabs from the same tree can have different characteristics and shapes to them. We have some live-edge slabs in stock at our woodshop from which you can choose, but we are also happy to accompany you to a local sawmill to see their selection, or we can send you photos of slabs that are available for purchase online.
