In addition to custom furniture design and construction, another service we offer at Smith Farms is furniture prototyping. This is a service we offer to designers who are looking to create their own line of furniture products and need the assistance of someone who is an expert in furniture construction.
We love working with interior designers! They are creative and always full of great ideas. They know what looks good in various types of homes and often have a good pulse on the types of pieces that aren’t currently available in retail furniture stores (and therefore need to be created).
What interior designers sometimes need help with, however, is in the functional aspect of their furniture designs—and that’s where the team at Smith Farms comes in! Our expertise in furniture construction allows us to take a designer’s concepts and make sure they are actually buildable. If they aren’t, we can help them make revisions that will make their pieces structurally sound, while still staying as true as possible to the original concepts.
Once we and the designer arrive at a design that checks all of the boxes, the Smith Farms team can build a prototype so the designer can see the piece in person. We can make any revisions necessary to further refine the design. We can adjust the proportions, the size, any style elements, etc.
Typically, during the prototyping process, which can involve multiple versions of a piece, we will use an inexpensive species of wood for construction to help keep costs down. However, the final prototype will be made from whatever quality of hardwood the designer desires. It’s a very collaborative process!
Are you a designer who is looking to bring some of your ideas for furniture pieces to life? Smith Farms would love to help! We are uniquely equipped to help with the furniture prototyping process and are available to work on all types of projects.
