At Smith Farms, we make custom furniture in all shapes, sizes, and types, but one of our most-requested items tends to be round dining tables.
We’ve made round dining tables to fit in homes both large and small, from many different species of hardwood, and in styles ranging from rustic farmhouse to sleek modern.
Round Dining Tables That Are Made to Order and Completely Custom
If you’ve been shopping for a round dining table for a while, you may have noticed that the options in stores and online can be a bit limited. Some retailers will offer round dining tables in a few different sizes and maybe with a few options for different finishes, but that’s where the customization ends.
When you work with a custom furniture builder like Smith Farms, there is no limit to the customization we can provide! We can build you a custom round dining table that’s the exact size you need—down to the sixteenth of an inch! We can hand select the slabs or boards that are used in your table so they have the type of grain pattern you prefer. We can even mix up a custom stain color to match an existing piece in your home.
Every piece we make is completely custom. It is designed with your style and your space in mind. Every detail is discussed with you and approved by you. When we deliver your finished dining table, it will be exactly what you expected!
Benefits of Round Dining Tables
Some of our customers go back and forth on whether they want a round dining table or a rectangular one—especially when they have a dining space that will accommodate either shape. There is no wrong answer when it comes to the shape of a dining table, but round dining tables definitely have some benefits over rectangular tables.
Most importantly, perhaps, is the ease with which you can see and communicate with everyone seated at the table. The entire dinner party can enjoy each other’s company, and no one feels excluded. When you’re at a rectangular dining table, on the other hand, it can be difficult to converse with anyone other than the people directly across from you and right next to you. Even talking with the person next to you at the table requires you to turn away from the person on the other side of you.
If space is limited in your dining area, a round table is often preferable to a square table because it’s easier accommodate more people if needed. With a small square table, you really can’t seat more than four people comfortably, while with a small round table, five or six people might be able to gather around.
Base Styles for Round Dining Tables
Pedestal bases are a popular option for round dining tables because they look great, but also because they can provide those seated at the table with a good amount of leg room. Within the category of pedestal bases, there are many options—each of which can drastically change the look of the table. We can design a solid, chunky pedestal base, or one that gives the table a lighter, more open feel. At Smith Farms, when we design tables with pedestal bases, we take great care to ensure that the table is still sturdy and stable.
If you prefer, we can also design and build a round dining table with legs as a base. While this is a less popular option, a round dining table with legs can be a great option if that’s the look you like.
In addition to the style of the base, you can choose the material from which it is made. While most of our clients choose to have their custom dining table made with a wood base, we also offer the option of a welded metal base.

Wood Selection for Round Dining Tables
Some of our clients come to us with a specific species of wood in mind for the custom table they want us to design and build. Others only have a vague idea of what type of wood would look best in their home. Whether you fall into the former category or the latter, Smith Farms can help. We can source just about any species of domestic hardwood, and even some imported hardwoods. Some of our favorite domestic hardwoods to work with include Black Walnut, White Oak, Alder, Maple, and Ash.
Every type of hardwood has its own combination of characteristics when it comes to things like color, grain pattern, and hardness. There is also the price point to keep in mind. Some exotic hardwoods can get quite expensive, and even some domestics can be pricey when they are in high demand. If the exact species of wood you want is outside of your budget, we can typically offer some alternatives that have similar characteristics but are more affordable.
Style of Top
When it comes to the top of your round dining table, there are multiple options there as well.
One option is to have a tabletop built from multiple boards joined together. The end result can have visible seams between the boards or can look seamless. For clients who want a seamless look, we will select boards with similar grain patterns to go next to each other.
Another option is to join two slabs together to create a tabletop. When two slabs from the same tree are used, it creates a very clean, uniform-looking top. Still another option is a live edge top. If you want a dining table that is on the smaller side, it might be possible to find a live edge round that is large enough in diameter to use for a tabletop. If not, we can use multiple live edge slabs and join them together to create the look you want.
