How Long Does It Take to Get Custom Furniture Made?

If you’ve been considering ordering a piece of custom furniture, you may have been curious how long you should expect to wait for your completed piece. Unlike furniture sold in retail stores, custom furniture is made to order and to our customers’ unique specifications. This means there is no furniture sitting in a warehouse somewhere waiting for you to make a purchase. Every piece is made from scratch, and that process doesn’t begin until you officially place your order.

The process begins when we receive your initial deposit. This places your project in the queue. Depending on our current workload, we may be able to start designing your piece right away, or you may have to wait a bit until we finish up the projects we’re currently working on. In our initial discussions, we can let you know approximately how long it will be until we get to your piece.

Next, we will enter the design phase. If you have a pretty good idea of what you want, this phase can go quickly. However, if you’re not sure how you want your piece to look, there may be a bit of back and forth that needs to happen until we arrive at a design that you’re excited about.

Once a design is agreed upon, we’ll start ordering materials. Some materials can be acquired in a matter of days, but others may need to be special ordered and will take a little longer to get to us. With certain species of hardwood lumber, we need to allow the material time to acclimate in our shop before we can start using it.

Then, it’s time to start building your piece of custom furniture! We know that by this time, you’re probably excited for your piece to be completed, but now is not the time to rush things. We take our time to craft a piece that’s beautiful, as well as sturdy. We make sure everything is expertly fitted together and finish it off with the best stain or paint and protective finish.

Overall, you can expect the process to take approximately 6-8 weeks from when we receive your initial deposit until the day of delivery. If we anticipate it will take longer than that, we will let you know up front. We will also do our best to keep you updated throughout the process. Sometimes, we have clients that have specific deadlines, such as an upcoming dinner party for which they want their new dining room table to be ready.
