At Smith Farms, we get a lot of requests for custom coffee tables. It’s not hard to understand why. Shopping for the perfect coffee table in retail stores, or even online, can be a challenge. Even for those who aren’t overly picky, it can be hard to find something that’s the right combination of style, size, and color. You might find something in the style you prefer, but it won’t be the right size for your particular living room. Or you might have a specific wood species or tone in mind, but can’t find anything in a style that will fit in with the rest of your furniture.
The solution might just be to have a custom coffee table designed and built.
If you’re considering a custom coffee table, you might be wondering what some of the current trends are in coffee table design. As people who are deep into the world of furniture, here’s what we’re seeing as far as trends for 2025:
Live-Edge Coffee Tables
Live-edge coffee tables have been a much-requested style in the past year, and we see this trend continuing into 2025. Whether you have a home that is traditional or more modern, rustic or sleek, a live-edge coffee table can complement and enhance your décor.
No two live-edge coffee tables are the same, which is why many of our customers love them! There’s just something about having a piece in your home that is completely unique to you.
If you only need a coffee table on the smaller side, you might opt for a live-edge table made from what’s called a wood “cookie.” In this context, a cookie is a cross-cut section of a tree trunk. It will create a tabletop that is somewhat round in shape and has a live-edge all the way around. Obviously, the size of the cookie will be limited to the diameter of the tree trunk, so if you have a large space to fill, a coffee table made from a cookie might not be the way to go.
If you need a larger coffee table and want it to have a live-edge feature, we would need to use slabs in its construction. Slabs will only have a live-edge on the long sides, and not the ends.
If you’re not exactly sure what you’re looking for, but know you want your custom coffee table to have some sort of live edge on it, we can help you design a piece based on your space.
Lighter Wood
Going into 2025, we’re continuing to see a lot of lighter wood species being used in custom furniture pieces. Wood from trees like Ash, Maple, and White Oak are all great options if you’re looking for a coffee table made from a light wood. We use these species all the time in our custom furniture shop. If you’re looking for something specific or unique, let us know and we can likely source it for you.
Although lighter wood is on trend now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using a darker wood like Walnut, Mohagany, or Teak. If that’s the look you like and that’s what will fit in with the rest of your home décor—go for it!

Natural Wood Tones
In addition to lighter wood species being on trend, natural tones are popular as well. This means you wouldn’t have the wood stained, but instead, allow the beauty of the wood itself to be the star. If you choose to go this direction, we would simply finish your piece with a clear, protective finish.
When you go with a natural finish, wood selection is very important, but we are happy to help with this as part of the design process.
Statement Piece Coffee Tables
A coffee table doesn’t have to “blend in” with the rest of your living room décor! Instead, it can be a stand-out piece, much like a statement art piece you would hang on your wall or put on a shelf.
Gone are the days when your coffee table needed to match your end tables or any other nearby wood furniture. Your custom coffee table can be made from a species of wood that’s completely different from anything else in the room, or have a style that’s a little bit eclectic. Have some fun with it! Furniture doesn’t need to be predictable or boring!
Oversized Coffee Tables
Want a coffee table that really makes a statement? Opt for an oversized table!
An oversized coffee table can make an otherwise average living room look a little more luxurious and high-end. With a large coffee table, you also have the option to add a statement décor piece to the center, which can further elevate the look of the room.
Even though large coffee tables are on trend right now, they can be surprisingly hard to find in retail stores and online. Having a custom coffee table built is the best way to get the exact size you’re looking for.
Coffee Tables with Substantial Bases
Another trend we like in coffee tables is those with substantial bases. We’re fans of coffee tables with chunky wood legs or welded steel bases. Coffee tables like these can really anchor a room.
What is “out” are coffee tables with hairpin legs. If we’re being honest, we’ve never really liked hairpin legs—even when they were wildly popular. There is little craftsmanship required when adding them to a table, and they are slightly impractical—taking up more space than other table base styles. Hairpin legs were also overdone in recent years. It’s time we move on from them, in our opinion.
Don’t Care About Coffee Table Trends?
Maybe you’ve read through this whole list of coffee table trends for 2025 and have determined that none of them are really for you. That’s perfectly fine! We fully realize not everyone cares about what is trendy, and we would never push our clients toward a furniture style they didn’t want just because it was on trend.
We want you to have the furniture piece that is right for you and your home!
