News flash: coffee tables don’t need to be boring! Although coffee tables tend to be one of the most-used pieces of furniture in a home, they can still be beautiful and contribute to a room’s design.
Here at Smith Farms, we love a well-made, custom, live-edge coffee table! The live edge gives the coffee table an organic shape—and if you know anything about interior design, having “organic” elements in your home is all the rage right now!
In the past, live-edge tables were largely found in modern homes, but today, they are found in all styles of homes, including rustic, traditional, modern, and others. It all depends on what type of wood you use and the design of the table. For example, a Cherry slab that is stained dark, given a high-gloss protective finish, and completed with sleek metal legs would be well-suited for a modern home, while a natural, White Oak table with an oil-rubbed finish would look great in “California Casual” style of home.
Often, when we build custom live-edge coffee tables, we use what are called “cross-cut rounds.” As the name implies, these slabs of wood come from a cross section of a tree, and they are round-ish in shape. They have a live edge around the entire perimeter, giving them an ideal organic shape. An example of this type of coffee table can be found in our Harmony Coffee Tables, like this Walnut Coffee Table.
We can also use slabs of wood in our custom live-edge tables. When we make live-edge tables out of slabs, you will either only have one live edge on the table, or we will piece together two slabs to give you a live edge on two sides. This is a great option when you want a coffee table that is more rectangular or square in shape, rather than one that is round.
With custom, live-edge coffee tables, we can either leave the bark on, or completely remove it. Leaving the bark on gives the table a more rustic look, but you’ll likely want us to add an epoxy resin over top to keep the bark from falling off and from scratching you or damaging your clothing when you brush up against it. Removing the bark, on the other hand, can give a live-edge table a sleeker look. We love both options! It just depends on your preference and the look you’re going for in your living room.
While the look of your custom coffee table is certainly important, we also recognize that it needs to be sturdy! Some people like to put their feet up on a coffee table, or they use it to hold all sorts of functional or decorative items. At Smith Farms, we are experts at construction and will build you a coffee table that is durable and solid! You won’t have to worry about it breaking—even if it is regularly used by you, your family, and your guests.
If you know you want a live-edge coffee table but aren’t sure about any of the details beyond that, Smith Farms can help! We can help you with design, as well as wood selection. For some inspiration, you can look at some of our furniture collection, or we can work with you to design something that is completely unique to you! You can also inquire about our current inventory to see if we have anything in stock that might work for your home.
