Even though we don’t live anywhere near Amish Country, there are still plenty of people in the Temecula and Menifee Valleys looking for Amish-style furniture. Why? Because Amish furniture is known for its timeless style and quality craftsmanship—qualities that many people are looking for in their furniture pieces.
Here at Smith Farms, we are also known for making furniture that has timeless style and quality craftsmanship. And while we’re not Amish, we certainly can built furniture that has many of the same characteristics as the furniture produced by those in the Amish communities.
For instance, we love the Amish’s use of fine hardwoods, as opposed to manufactured wood products like particle board, laminates, or veneers. We believe that using quality materials is a great start to making high-quality finished pieces. We carefully select the wood that we use in every piece of furniture we build, so it has the look you want, as well as the strength and durability to make it last through many years of use.
Also like the Amish, we use traditional joinery in a lot of our construction. For example, we make use of mortise and tenon and dovetail joints when needed to improve the stability of a piece. We don’t exclusively use traditional joinery in our furniture, but we are skilled in this area, and make use of it often.
We’re also big fans of furniture with clean lines. The Amish are largely known for the Shaker-style furniture, which is characterized by mostly straight lines, accompanies by some well-placed, subtle curves. Tapered legs on tables and chairs are another hallmark of Shaker design. Shaker furniture tends to focus on simplicity, utility, and comfort, which are things we tend to focus on as well. While we certainly don’t mind designing and building pieces that are more ornate or modern in style, the majority of what we make is furniture that’s more traditional.
One area that we differ from the Amish in our furniture building is in the use of power tools. The Amish are famous for crafting furniture using only hand tools and pneumatic tools. At Smith Farms, we do have our share of tools in our shop that are powered by electricity, and we aren’t ashamed to say that we use them! There are certain tasks that are just made more efficient with the use of power tools, and power tools don’t compromise the quality of our pieces in the slightest. Working as efficiently as possible helps us to keep our prices competitive, which our customers certainly appreciate!
